Tahoma (Quiet Walk)

For this Tahoma project, we worked closely with the client to select the perfect natural stone to complement the home’s contemporary design. Through our experience and material knowledge, we helped bring his vision to life, creating a refined, modern exterior that remains one of our favorite projects to date.

Job Walkthrough

When we were approached for this project, I visited the site to assess existing conditions and immediately identified several serious issues, including improper waterproofing, poor product selection, and deficient masonry installation practices. We worked closely with the client to understand his goals and develop a tailored solution that was the right fit for his project.

Masonry Preparation

Due to a significant prior failure on this project, protecting the home was a top priority. We worked closely with the GC to select a high-performance waterproofing system that would provide long-term protection. Once waterproofed, we completed the substrate installation using properly lapped lath panels, 8” fastener spacing, 3” angle iron for added support, and a monolithic bitumen waterproofing system—ensuring durability, redundancy, and peace of mind.

Timeless modern natural stone

The client initially proposed a project utilizing a cast concrete product, which would not have been well suited to Tahoe’s harsh climate. After gaining a clear understanding of his objectives, we recommended a granite alternative—one that not only exceeded aesthetic expectations but also offered superior durability and longevity. The result is a timeless solution designed to withstand the element

With both form and function in mind, we collaborated closely to select this beautiful New Hampshire granite, installed in long coursing to complement the modern corten steel panels. Together, these materials not only enhance the architectural aesthetic but also provide a durable solution to protect the home from a persistent woodpecker issue.

The client expressed concerns about using a thin natural stone veneer and wanted the added protection of natural stone against the elements. While a dry-stack aesthetic is visually appealing, it allows moisture to infiltrate behind the veneer. In harsh freeze-thaw climates, this trapped moisture can expand, stressing the substrate and ultimately leading to system failures. Many masonry contractors

For this reason, we grout all of our thin natural stone veneer installations without compromise. Proper grouting significantly improves weather resistance, mitigates freeze-thaw damage, and protects our clients’ investment for the long term

We worked closely with the GC to achieve the client’s vision—minimizing build-out to maintain a consistent plane that complements the steel cladding added later. While the client initially had concerns the material might appear artificial, we assured them our craftsmanship would deliver an authentic stone appearance. This project became an opportunity to showcase our ability to create a finish vir

Long, clean granite coursing grounds the structure while maintaining a consistent plane with the corten steel cladding above. The result is a seamless transition between materials—modern in expression, durable by design, and built to perform in Tahoe’s demanding climate.
